Punjab Kings (PBKS), finalists in the previous IPL season, opted for a measured approach at the IPL 2026 auction held in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. With a strong core already in place after an impressive run last season, the franchise made only four additions to its squad, focusing on balance rather than big-name splurges.
PBKS entered the auction with limited slots to fill, aiming to complete their 25-player roster without disrupting team chemistry. As a result, the Kings stayed away from bidding wars and carefully selected two capped and two uncapped players who fit specific roles in the squad.
Australian fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis emerged as Punjab Kings’ most expensive signing at this year’s auction. The left-arm pacer brings valuable experience and variety to the bowling attack, especially with his ability to operate effectively in the powerplay and at the death.
The Kings opened their auction account by signing Cooper Connolly, a young Australian batting all-rounder, for Rs 3 crore. Connolly, known for his calm approach and versatility, offers PBKS much-needed flexibility in the middle order. In addition to his left-handed batting, he can also contribute with his slow left-arm spin, making him a useful option on spin-friendly surfaces.
Following the auction, PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer shared insights into the team’s decision-making process and admitted that Connolly was not part of their initial plans.
“Honestly, he wasn’t there in our mind at the start,” Iyer said. “But as we brainstormed and narrowed down our options, we realized he fit the position perfectly. He has a great temperament and the ability to finish games, which is very important in the IPL.”
Iyer also expressed surprise at securing Connolly at a relatively modest price. “We actually thought his price would go much higher. Getting him for 3 was unexpected,” he added.
With a settled squad and smart additions, Punjab Kings will look to build on last season’s success and make another strong push for the title in IPL 2026.
